Meet Chantel

Bio

Chantel Watkins is a dedicated community leader who has spent over 15 years working to build a fairer, stronger Detroit. Raised by military veterans and as a single mother, she understands firsthand the challenges many Detroiters face. Having lived throughout District 5—from east to west—and growing up as one of seven siblings, she brings both resilience and a collaborative spirit to every effort she leads.

A former precinct delegate and an engaging political radio and podcast host, Chantel has earned widespread recognition for her work. Her achievements include being named the African American Leadership Awards 2023 Precinct Delegate of the Year, a 2022 Best of Detroit Community Activist Nominee, one of Detroit’s 2018 Future Changemakers, and a 2023 Hour Detroiter’s Spotlight honoree.

Chantel’s hands-on approach is evident in her advocacy for policies that benefit everyday residents. From championing a historic $15 minimum wage through the Raise the Wage campaign to fighting excessive utility rate hikes, she has consistently worked to protect and uplift the community. Her efforts have also extended to raising over $60,000 in mutual aid for local causes and mentoring rising community leaders.

With an unwavering dedication to positive change, Chantel Watkins is a steadfast force for progress—committed to ensuring that every voice in Detroit is heard and that every community has the opportunity to thrive.
